II. How Decing Relates to other Applications

Comparison to Competitors

Decing is a survey and polling web tool, which has many competitors online. Some of these competitors include FluidSurveys, Survey Monkey, JetForm, Survs, Icebrrg, etc. Although these sites have a few attributes that are similar to Decing, there are other areas that make Decing more user- friendly and more accessible to groups of people.

Unique Uses

Decing is a 100% free service that can be used to create a private voting source. Unlike most surveying web tools, Decing does not require any registration in order to use the application.

The site is designed for mainly small teams. Creators of the poll are able to choose who they want to have as participants in the survey. By not having the poll be completely open, small teams, such as businesses and classrooms, are able to make decisions that are based off what the people in the team want rather than what anyone who happens to come across the site wants. In order to make sure that only those invited to the survey are the ones who participate, an access key is sent from the creator, to all of the participants.

This web tool can be found at www.decing.com. Here, the creator can go in, create a poll, and then can have the selected participants come to the site and take the survey. However, in addition to being able to use the poll on the Decing website, it can also be used with the application Google Wave."Google Wave is an online tool for real-time communication and collaboration. A wave can be both a conversation and a document where people can discuss and work together using richly formatted text, photos, videos, maps, and more."

III. Real World Application

*_-This section will include 3 Lesson Plans for each Elementary, Secondary, and

Post Secondary levels. One out of the three needs to be STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, & Math) related. _*
-An additional section under this heading will provide information about how this application can be used in a Business/Industry Setting.

Decing can be a practical learning tool in a small business atmosphere. In a small business setting, decisions often need to be made quickly; since most people can easily access the Internet, an online surveying tool is ideal. It allows those in the wave to see the options and make a quick vote anonymously. Members don't need to register for the tool when invited to make a vote; it is a simplistic process for the voters. Decing also allows the voters to select more than one option. This could be applied in many situations. If the voter is torn between two options, he/she can place weights on each vote.

This Web 2.0 tool can be used when businesses are training employees. If a small business conducted a series of training sessions, Decing could provide a way for each participant to provide feedback on the process. The survey topic could be “What was the most helpful part of the training session?” Decing allows the creator to add several choices and add numerous participants. If an employee found several portions of a training session helpful, he/she can place gems in more than one choice to add weight to the vote. This would provide anonymous feedback to the coordinator of the training session(s), and it would give the employees a chance to voice their opinion and know that they matter.

IV. Demonstration of Educational ValueAlthough there are many people flaunting their Web 2.0 products, Decing is one of those great products that helps provide end-to-end solutions for casting a decision. Decing helps boost the quality and speed of decisions that for example small business team may need to make. It allows the voters to select more than one option and keeps everything anonymous. Along with numerous options if the voter is only limited to two they will not get torn between those two because he/she can place weights on each vote. The potential educational values that all persons gain from using Decing are limitless. It gives the educator abilities to organize, collect the information, get feedback quickly, and then continue to apply their knowledge.

The application allows for a group of people to take an anonymous poll where you are allowed to see who has taken or not taken the poll but you are not allowed to see their results. You are allowed to choose the audience and see everyone who was chosen to take the answer the questions but their answers are kept hidden. (http://www.makeuseof.com/dir/decing-anonymous-polls/)

When you create a new vote you have to summarize the purpose for this vote and the subject matter it is about.

The device can be very helpful in an educational setting. Children who have opinions that oppose others may feel intimidated to voice their ideas. “Voting for an option automatically means that you are opposing the other, and there are people who are way too sensitive when it comes to such matters.” (http://www.killerstartups.com/Web20/decing-com-voting-made-simple-reliable)

Each participant is given an access key that they type in, in order to vote. If for some reason they type in their access key and see that a vote has already been cast from them and they know that they did not make the vote then the poll will be considered invalid. This could be valuable in a secondary educational setting because if students were working on a project that required a survey or poll they would be sure that their information is valid or not based on the voters. Here is a great YouTube video that goes through the gadget step-by-step: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uW47UlONf84. It shows the basics of Decing and general settings available with the tool. It merely shows the primary concepts and general settings of Decing. The main stages/steps are:

    1. specify subject of poll/survey

    2. specify options

    3. check wave participants who will participate in voting (other wave participants will be observers of the voting)

    4. specify weights for vote participants

    5. send your vote to the server

    6. voting process: vote and wait until others will complete voting

    7. observe voting results when all participants have sent their selections

Once the survey creator finishes composing the poll, he/she will receive Access Keys for all participants. Even though the composer of the survey knows all of the Access Keys, this is only so he/she can convey that to the participants; each vote will remain private. If a participant somehow discovers another participant's access key and casts a second vote in that person's place, it will be obvious to the participant that he/she has not voted yet, thus, he/she should still be able to cast a vote. If this situation occurs, the entire poll will be invalid. A new survey will need to be conducted. The purpose of Access Keys is to ensure each participant has one vote and can easily gain access to that specific survey without having to register.

While voting if the voters cannot choose between two options, they are allowed to pick two and they can weight the vote which they are leaning towards more, Decing calls the weights Gems, and there are a certain amount that the voter can distribute between choices. www.decing.com/" class="external-link" rel="nofollow">http://www.decing.com/

  19. Hello
Here comes our suggestions of how to use decing in the classroom and the business world:
We came up that decing would for example be an excellent tool to arrange a parents´meeting. One could send a pol to parents according a suitable time and that way it helps teacher to plan his/her day. One could also use decing to make pupil more involved/ paritcipate in planing theirstudies. For example the teacher could make a pol of choosing the material or the way of working. What we mean is that teacher could for example do a pol of if the pupils would like to work in groups/pairs or in some other way on given subject. Decing would be great in the school world because it gives every chosen pupil a change to give their opinion and a feeling of making a difference. It promotes democracy even if the pupils make their voice heard anonymously because then even the most shy student have a change to express his/hers opinion, which they perhaps wouldn't do in the classroom. This way decing highlights democracy.
After the course teacher could use decing when making pupils to evaluate the course. For example in a form of online form.
In a business world one could use decing in different kind of surveys for example to catch new possible clients. What we mean by this is that most certainly have many companies done research of possible target group of their product. By sending a pol of any kind could be used as a kind of adverticing of the company.I.e. with the help of decing they can fast and easy find out the possible future clients or partner of co-operation.

we had one more thing to point out your work. In the section of unique uses there is a quotation about Google wave but the source of the where it's taken is missing. It would be great if you could fix it.

That was what we came up this time. Just ask if something was unclear. Great work with the project everyone!!!
    greetings from Sweden
    Sara and Mervi
