“Stay connected with friends, family or co-workers in real time.”

  • Flokio is a micro-blogging website that has been around since its creation in 2008 (Flokio, 2008) 1. It lets a diverse and exclusive set of individuals with common interests share updates on specific topics, as well as bookmark Urls, youTube video's, and Flickr pictures. It differs from a traditional blog in the amount of content that is present. A microblog is much smaller than a normal blog. Rather than being lengthy and wordy, a microblog could consist of a small sentence fragment, an image, or video (Wikipedia, 2010).  2
  • Because micro-blogging consists of short sentences, it is easily accessible and very efficient. It allows for people to get straight to the point, and it increases communication effectiveness (Wikipedia, 2010) 2. Flokio is especially helpful for those with strong interests in a particular subject; they can easily create a group on their interest or join an existing group.
  • The power of the group is essential to Flokio.  Take for example a sports team that you or your child participates in.  Wouldn't it be cool to have the players, parents, and coaches all in one place?  It's a simple set-up and by making a group private you can share things like game and practice schedules, snack responsibilities, comments on the game, and questions for the coach with your small group of individuals (Killer Startups, 2009) 3.

1.1 How Flokio Works"> 1.1 How Flokio Works

Unknown macro: {center}

It's very easy to get started with Flokio.

First, click on the "sign up" button in the top right corner of the website. If you have a Facebook or Twitter account, you can sign in using one of those.

Once you have clicked on "sign up", you fill out basic information on yourself as shown on the left, then click, "create new account."

While you can view public groups without having a Flokio account, you can not join groups unless you sign in. Click on either "Public Groups" or "Private Groups" to browse or use the search bar. If you want to join a private group, you must request to join the group.

To join a group, you must click the button that says “Join Group” in the top right corner.  To the left is a picture illustrating the layout of the "Care for cats" group page. You can view posts from others, write a new post, and include various forms of media.

If you click on the small icons below the "Update" box, the menu will expand, allowing for inclusion of the different forms of media. Enter in the URL to include it in your post.  You can type into the text box underneath “What are you doing” and  click “Update” to post your comment and any attachments.

If you desire to create your own group, return to the Home page.  Enter in a desired group name and web address. Note: The web address will not appear on the group page, it is simply a method of identifying your group page by URL through Flokio. The web address is more like a key name for your group than anything else.

To the left is an image of the screen that will appear once you have clicked "Create". It will ask for additional information, including a short description, initial postings, and privacy settings. The group creator can change color layout, invite group members, and view the media that has been attached to the group page.

After your experience with Flokio, this side tab allows you to leave comments and feedback regarding the website.

2.1 Pros and Cons"> 2.1 Pros and Cons

Pros

Cons

At Flokio, you can follow other people to
see what they are writing and doing.
Other people can also follow you.
You also have the possibility to see how many
followers you and others have.

There is a lack of safety. There is no specific service that
controls your personal information.  Anyone can follow you
unless you make your group private.  But, f you want to join
a public group this is out of your control

You have the opportunity to connect with
people from around the world.

Flokio is only available in English which could limit it's reach in other places.

You can write in other public groups of people with common interest and receive updates.

You do not have a "home" or "my space" to write in.
Everything is in groups.

You can create a private group to only share information
with close friends and family.

The fan-base of Flokio is limited and it might me hard to connect with a large group of people.

If you already have a Facebook or Twitter account, you already
have a Flokio account and you can easily link between them.

Flokio is not censored and the content is not screened or suitable for all ages.

The content and posts within Flokio are clear, concise, and on a smaller scale.

You will not have the opportunity to provide detailed posts about events or interests.

2.2 Similar Applications">2.2 Similar Applications

The idea of a microblog is a very popular one.  There are many applications similar to Flokio such as:

  • Tumblr: Created in 2007, Tumblr allows users to post multimedia and other content to a short-form blog, named a "tumblelog." Users can follow other users' blogs, as well as make their blogs private.  Much of the website's features are accessed from the "dashboard" interface, where the option to post content and posts of followed blogs appear.
  • FriendFeed: The goal of FriendFeed is to make content on the Web more relevant and useful by using existing social networks as a tool for discovering interesting information. Users can be an individual, business or organization. FriendFeed is a real-time feed aggregator that consolidates the updates from social media and networking sites, social bookmarking websites, and blogging updates.
  • Posterus: A micro-blogging site that allows you to create a "space" to share common interests with friends, family, businesses, and travelers.
  • Microblogr: A micro-blog that incorporates all the typical aspects like groups, a news feed, comments, and photos, but it integrates SMS communication, allowing user to communicate via their cellphones.

For more microblogging sites check out 40 Twitter Like Websites 4.

Flokio works with other blogging and social networking sites to make groups for organizing information.

  • 2.3 Flokio with Twitter.  When you find an interesting group on Flokio, or if you make a new one yourself, you can post the group on your Twitter account. In order to do this, click on the side bar link that says "Share on Twitter" and a page will pop up prompting you to sign in using your Twitter information. Then your Twitter page will appear with the name of the group already in the dialogue box. Then click on "Tweet This", and it will post to your news feed 5.

  • 2.4 Flokio with YouTube and Flickr. With Flokio you can share YouTube-clips, Flickr-images, and link webpages. You can create a "headline" to your update to make it easier for other people to find and see what you are doing at the moment 6 7.

  • 2.5 Flokio with Facebook.   Facebook groups can be linked into Flokio groups in order to spread awareness of a specific group. There is no correlation between Flokio activity and appearance of facebook statuses 8.

3.2 Business and Industry">3.2 Business and Industry

  • Flokio can be used in business as an efficient form of communication. Businesses can create groups for their employees. This allows for employees to communicate with each other in a universal location, and it makes it possible for management to issue news and updates to their employees quickly and easily.
  • Flokio can make it easy for large corporations to share new ideas pertaining to conferencing, employees, and other important aspects of the business.  Employee’s could comment suggestions or views about possible changes.
  • Industries can also create a Flokio for customers to view and share thoughts.  For instance, a food industry might create a page pertaining to opinions on their food, packaging, delivery, and what-not.  The business could get a good insite as to what their customers want the company to change or improve.
  • Flokio could also be used with just employees in a business.  They may create a group discussing working hours or helping employees find others to fill in for them if they cannot make it to work for some reason.

4.Demonstration of Educational Value">4. Demonstration of Educational Value

  • Flokio could be used as an excellent tool within the classroom by creating a group to discuss topics that are puzzling, interesting, or challenging. Flokio allows for private groups, so there would be no worries about other users joining without permission. A teacher could monitor the group to see what the students are discussing, thus increasing the progress of class.
  • Flokio could also be an excellent site for parent/teacher communication. A group could be created for the parents of the classroom, and parents could express concerns, ideas, or approval via the web. The teacher could ask questions to the parents or ask parents to help out with classroom activities, or offer advice and ideas through their own experiences.
  •  Flokio can be used in the classroom.  Teachers may form a private group with other teachers across the country or world about simply the topic of “food.”  Students could be required to post what type of foods they eat at home or in their country.  Teachers can make the students create a Social Studies type project on “cuisine” or “culture” pertaining to what they learned from other students.
  • Flokio also has the opportunity to teach students effective ways to integrate technology into learning. Through technology, students have the opportunity to meet individuals from other communities, states, or countries, and they can learn from these new acquaintances. Students can learn how to successfully manage an online group and understand how to effectively use resources provided by others.
  • Another use of Flokio within the classroom could be involving it with classroom discussions.  Say a teacher is having a discussion about World War Two.  The teacher could assign students to post new things they learn about it for a homework assignment.   Based on those posts, a class discussion could be formed for the next day, and students can learn from other students.
  • Flokio could be used for students to conduct research.  The threads are easy for anyone to monitor and make conclusions about. Say there is a tread on the NCAA Final Four Tournament.  Many people have inputs and suggestions about that, so a student would be able to follow which team’s people favor, which teams people believe will go the farthest, or which team people seem to dislike.

5.How Flokio is Used Internationally">5. How Flokio is Used Internationally

  • Flokio has the potential to become a new informal communication medium for collaborative work. Online communication with E-mail and other tools are common now, and as more collaboration is being done remotely through technology, there are relatively fewer opportunities for face-to-face, informal conversations.
  • Microblogging has the potential to support informal communication among co- workers because of the interesting "whereabouts" and "status updates". The areas where it looks to impact are the informational effects and the social and emotional effects. The informational effects include increased opportunistic valuable information sharing, expertise realizing, building and maintaining common ground. The social and emotional effects are mainly enhancing the feeling of connectedness among co-workers.
  • Flokio can be helpful for communicating with customers and producers across the world. It can be a fun way for a business team to communicate ideas about a project.
  • The main issues with micro-blogging are privacy, security, and integration due to the concerns of broadcasting social or work information to everyone who follows their feed. One good thing about Flokio is that it is a micro-blog which provides private groups where you as a private person or the management can organize the work and still be safe.

  • Flokio, like other microblogging websites, (e.g. Facebook) connects users from various countries who share a common interest. Through this, people from various international areas can bond on a common topic whether it be sports, politics, or common activities they enjoy doing. This in turn shows the connection between people of different cultures.
