I. History

-Questions to consider: How was the application developed? How does the application work? Are there any ways to use this application alongside others?

<Tracy- There is a great, brief video on the homepage of the Gowalla site that demonstrates how it is used.  There also several other videos that users can watch by just highlighting one of the pictures that scrolls above the toolbar.

<Tracy- This site provides good information on the basics (the people involved with running it, the headquarters, news, etc).  I think this would be a great source to use and a way to contact the people that created it too!

<Terran- An article about Gowalla and other new Web 2.0 websites.

<Terran- This is an unofficial message board discussing Gowalla and its tools and items.

<Tracy- Here's a video with the CEO of Gowalla.  He discusses how Gowalla was created, information about Gowalla, and information about the team that created it.

<Tracy- Here's information from Gowalla on how to create spots and edit them:

<Jane - Here's some info about Gowalla and the IPhone, and the applications it has to offer.  It talks more about the history of it as well.

<Kayla - Here is the link to wikipedia's definition of Gowalla.  I know wikipedia isn't supposed to be the "most reliable" site but I think in this case it still gives a good basic idea of what Gowalla is.

<Jane - This site is good with giving some background and also some comparisons to other top microblogging sites.

II. How Gowalla Relates to other Applications

-Questions to consider: How does this application compare to the competitors? What are some unique uses of this specific application?

<Jake- Here is another site that compares Gowalla to Four-Square when they are linked with Twitter!>

<Kayla - This is an article about Foursquare and Gowalla appearing on mobile phones.  The end of the article is a brief but good description of what Gowalla does and is.

<Kayla - This is an article that discusses how Gowalla relates and is used within Facebook.

<Tracy- An interesting article that compares Gowalla to it's rival Four-Square.  It provides some great information about its strengths and weaknesses and was written pretty recently.

<Terran - <Terran - Here is a page comparing Gowalla to Four Square. It has a comparison, a table with the features od both compared side by side, and a paragraph detailing Gowalla's faults.

<Jane - Here it talks about more comparison between Four Square.  Seems like Four Square is a frequent comparison to Gowalla?  Nor too much information, but I enjoyed reading the comments back on the site, giving us personal views on it.

III. Real World Application

-This section will include 3 Lesson Plans for each Elementary, Secondary, and Post Secondary levels. One out of the three needs to be STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, & Math) related.

-An additional section under this heading will provide information about how this application can be used in a Business/Industry Setting.

<Jake- Businesses are wanting to use Gowalla to advertise. For instance, if a person "checks in" at a mall, then local shops in the mall could advertise their sales, deals, etc. Here is a website talking about this.>

<Shelby- People are using Gowalla to discover new places that they have never been. The creator wants you to go to a place that you have never been even if its only 30 min. outside of your town. Its a great device for traveling.

<Tracy- How the fashion industry uses Gowalla:

IV. Demonstration of Educational Value

<Tracy- I just looked at the terms for Gowalla and its for users that are 18 or older.  This means we will need to create lesson plans for college (undergraduate or graduates), business, industries, etc.

<Shelby- Geocaching is a high tech treasure hunting game. A teacher decided to play this game with her students, and to make it more interesting she let them use Gowalla to look up what logitude and latitude ment. Then the students (if they had Gowalla on there phone) could use Gowalla throughout the game.

 V. How Gowalla is used Internationally?

-Provide examples and/or information about how this application can be used in countries outside of the United States.

<Shelby- This is from a blog from the creator.

I feel like Gowalla tries to do more globally. They seem focused on the international benefits of checkpointing, and I really love that concept.  The world opens up for me and my children when we look at the checkpoints placed in all corners of the earth. They also did a campaign for Haiti and a little ditty for the Olympics.  These posts help me explore new places and share the world from the hiking trail or in the car when it is raining.
