Photoshop Online is the newest installment of the Photoshop series by Adobe. Really the first of its kind, Photoshop Online utilizes Adobe's Flash technology in order to allow any user with a decently quick internet connection (normally broadband) to be able to quickly and efficiently edit and save photos online.  Photoshop was created by Thomas Knoll as a hobby.  His brother, John Knoll, saw his work and helped collaborate on the project.  They worked on it for a few years revising the program to make it user friendly.  Photoshop 1.0 was first released in 1990 exclusively on Macintosh. 7 Since 1990, there have been improvements made to Photoshop and new versions available almost every year.  There have been huge improvements in the technology of Photoshop and what the program is capable to do to create images and text.  New tools are available with every new program and other technologies are merging with Photoshop, such as Dreamweaver.  The latest version was released in April 2010, CS5 (version 12). 10

Unique Ways of Using Photoshop ">Unique Ways of Using Photoshop

----* A very unique way to use Photoshop online is to make a photo album or slideshow that will allow you to view any photo that you want. It puts all the photos in a big circle, which allows the viewer to see all the different photos at once. When you want to zoom in on a photo to get a closer look, all you have to do is click on the photo that you want to see and the whole circle will rotate so that the photo that you chose is now in front. Once you are finished looking at that photo you can click on it again to zoom out to see all of the photos again. *

  • Another unique aspect is sharing your pictures with your friends and them sharing their pictures with you. You can also be informed of when your friends have posted new photos. Here is a table showing some similarities and differences between Photoshop Online and another photo editing website Flickr.

Photoshop Online

Flickr

Sharing

You are able to choose whether or not
you want your albums to be made available
for the public to view.

There are different privacy levels that you can set your albums on.
There is a setting that will make the photos available to anyone,
there is a setting where only specified friends can view the photos,
and then there is a setting where you are the only one that can see the photos.

Editing

There are many ways you can edit your photos.
Some of these are: popping the color, changing
the hue of the photo, making it black and white,
removing red eye, and touching the photo up.

When editing a photo on Flickr, you are actually using the Picnik software to
edit your photos. You edit your photo on the Picnik website and then you can
save them back to your Flickr albums.

Cost

There may be some service fees depending
on what your level of membership is.

Since Flickr is associated with Yahoo it is free to just have the normal
membership. You can upgrade to a pro account for about $25 that will give
you an unlimited amount of storage space and unlimited uploads.

  • You can add different effects to your photos. For example, if there was not much light when you took the photo then you can brighten the photo to whatever level of brightness that you want. Another effect that can be added to your photos is making certain aspects of the photo stand out more than others by using enhanced colors. A cool thing that you can do with Photoshop Online is make your photos look like they are sketches. They look like they were drawn and not captured by a camera.
  •  Privacy is an important issue, especially if Photoshop is used in the classroom.  Photoshop allows the user to share photographs with anyone, only friends, or no one at all.

Examples of Its Use in Education">Examples of Its Use in Education

  • This technology can help students in computer graphic or photography classes start to see how to edit and manipulate photographs.  Computer graphics are seen every day on television, the internet, advertising, and in all other sorts of media.  Photoshop can introduce students to the process of making appealing advertisements, web pages, and pictures.
  • Another example of its use in education could be to teach students different forms of art.  Students could take pictures and make them resemble impressionist paintings.
  • Some teachers have talked about its use in Webpage design.  Students can use Photoshop to create cool and exciting pictures that can be incorporated to websites.
  • Photoshop can stimulate creativity and excitement in learning.  Today's students are geared towards technology and understand computers more than the elder population.  Students would like to use Photoshop because it is a cool program that is easy to use.  This ease of use will let the students' mind and creativity expand without being limited by hard-to-use software.
  • One student who used Photoshop remarked, "I really liked creating panoramic images. That feature came in handy for a track meet picture." 5

Use of Photoshop Internationally">Use of Photoshop Internationally

How is the application used in China? 6 8">How is the application used in China? 6 8

  • The application has not been widely known and used in China, because of the foreign language and limited network speed. First, it is uncomfortable and difficult for Chinese people to view a web page which is in a foreign language, although to those who can master English have no problem. In addition, the flash on the homepage has a bad effect on the network speed. Therefore most people in China prefer to use the simplified Chinese version of Adobe Photoshop rather than trying the online one.
  • Despite that, a lot of people in China, especially who are living in developed big cities such as Beijing, Shanghai, Hong Kong, and Taipei are trying to use the application. They sign in, take advantage of the basic functions, share their experience on their blogs and  encourage others to try it. But this information sharing varies significantly by industry, profession, and geographic region. People who work in the field of graphic designing pay more attention to it.

  • The application has hardly been used in the field of education in China. Teachers and professors, except who major in Educational Technology, have never used it to assist teaching.
  • Nevertheless, we could predict its potential popularity among the new generation of Chinese, who makes up a large proportion of  the world's citizens and are enthusiastic for new technologies, which help them show themselves and construct networks online. The main reason why Photoshop Online hasn't caught up might be that people simply don't  know its existence! (Some guy asked: "Could I use Photoshop online?  on a popular Chinese Q&A  forum. However, only one person told him to download the Photoshop software and no one else responded!) As a matter of fact, Photoshop is well known and widely used in and out of school, at home and in relevant industries, such as in advertising and photography. In addition to all the merits of Photoshop, Photoshop Online has the great function of connecting all its users, who might learn from each other and make friends.  It's really an eye-catcher for the Chinese citizens. We could say that if Photoshop Online made Chinese one of its selective languages, its popularity is only a matter of time.

  • Its potential in the field of education is also great. As the ongoing education reform attaches more and more importance to arts education, social studies, and learning to be a citizen of the world, Photoshop Online might be seen as a wonderful technology which fosters all these qualities in the children.

Hi, my name is Chris Kraner. I think that this project could end up being very interesting, and I would like to take the technical aspects of this, such as what makes it work, what kind of program features there are, and so forth.

What I am doing over spring break is the best thing. I'm going home. ^_^

  4. Unknown User (adugan)

  6. Unknown User (btwahl)

hey hey ya'll!  I can see that so far everyone wants to do really good on this project.  We need to keep this up for a few weeks and then we won't have to take the final!

I will be going rock climbing for spring break.  have a good one ya'll!

  7. Unknown User (btwahl)

Hi everyone!  I hope everyone is ready to jump in and get started on Project II.  Our first goal is to get some research about Photoshop Online.  This part is worth 6 points.  If we do not get these 6 points we won't get the superior rating.  Everyone in the group must make at least 3 postings to our research page.  If you have any questions please do not hesitate to ask me!  Let's start getting some research in!

    1. Hi Ben,

Thanks for the note to reminder your members. One suggestion you can start to create your team's draft wiki chapter based on the ten questions offered by Dr. Newby in Project TWO assessment guide. Check out group 29 or 30 for examples. This can save your team much time to serach for research direction.

Don't forget to contact your IPs and inform your team members. Find a good way to have everyone communicate intensively offline and online. You may use the confluene or other tools you guys feel more comfortabel.

      Good Luck!

      Shih-Ping (smile)

  8. Hi everyone! I'm Zhang Fen from Beijing Normal University. Such a project is very exciting and also challenging for me as a major of Early Childhood Education.Anyway, I will try my best and am expecting a fulfilling journey with the whole team. Can't wait to hear your voice online(wink)

  9. Hello, everyone! I am Zhang Lei, one of your partners from Beijing Normal University,China. My major is History of Education, which may be so different from yours. But I do think we will have a fantastic teamwork, and I will do my best. Maybe we do need more and deep contacts.

  10. hello, I am liling from Beijing Normal University. My major is curriculum and instruction. I am very glad to meet  everyonehere.I  think we can do wonderful job with our effort .I expect to communite with everyone and work together happily.(smile)

  11. Unknown User (btwahl)

Hello international partners!  Glad to see you on our page!  Hopefully we can talk very soon!

  12. Unknown User (btwahl)

Hi everyone!  I have added our International Partners (IP's) to the email list.  Let's try to communicate through this wiki page though...it is a lot easier and won't clutter your email inbox.

  13. Unknown User (btwahl)

From the times everyone gave to me, I think this Thursday, April 2 would be the best day to talk (sorry Ty, I know you can't meet at this time but I don't know how else I can arrange it for us to talk this week).  That would be after 7:00 PM USA time and after 7:00 AM Beijing time.  From the sounds of that, it sounds kind of bad for the IP's.  It looks like it might be hard to set up a video conference with everyone.  What do you all think about a online chat room?  We need to all get in contact this week before April 3rd.  Anyone have suggestions?

  14. Unknown User (btwahl)

What's up everyone?  Hopefully some comments should be coming in soon.  Remeber that they are due by 10:00 PM (this is our deadline, not the projects).  Also, Shih-Ping reminded me that we need to keep using our technology.  We need to do this so we know how it works when presentation time roles around.

Hello everyone!! (Sorry Ben that I am just getting to comment, it's been a very busy first half of the week).  I believe that I will be editing the F page along with Li Ling, Zhang Fen and Zhang Lei.  I am looking forward to working with you three in order to make this page the best (smile) Let me know if you have any questions! Talk to you soon!

    1. Hello, Amanda! I am also expecting the prospective work with you! I just want to know whether the lesson plans should be actually existing. Can we imagine an ideal plan?

      1. Unknown User (adugan)

We can either find some existing lesson plans or we can create our own! I found the post secondary one online and re-worked it a little but.  The options are endless!

Hello team. Ben, I have a question about the new roles. I had originally said that I would do the post-secondary lesson plan. Do you still plan on me doing that since the re-arranging of the roles? I can if you want me to, I was just wondering.

Hello everyone! Sorry I'm a little late on leaving a comment on this too, its been a busy week for me also. I think that if 7 am is too early for our IP's then we should probably just stick to an online chat room but we could do it later in the night, so it is later for them also. I guess we could just ask them and see what works best for them.

    1. Unknown User (btwahl)

I think that is a good idea.  I too think we should do a chat room...a video conference would be too hard to set up with everyone's schedules.

  18. Unknown User (btwahl)

Reed, if you wouldn't mind that is probably a good idea.  I feel like the lesson plans are going to be the hardest.  Shih-Ping and Profesor Newby said we need three different examples for each lesson plan so your help would be great.  Thanks for the effort!

  19. Unknown User (btwahl)

Good work on the page so far everyone!  Let's keep it up!

  20. Unknown User (rfoxwort)

That sounds good. I did not realize that we needed three lesson plans for each thing.

  21. Unknown User (davis43)

Hey how's everyone doing?  The page is coming along very nicely.  I am looking forward to continuing to progress to our end product.  Alright see you guys later!

  22. Unknown User (btwahl)

We are on the right track to getting a superior rating.  I could be wrong but I am pretty sure no one wants to stay until Saturday for the EDCI 270 final.  Let's keep it up.  We only have a little over two weeks until the presentation!

  23. Unknown User (davis43)

Hey guys!  I was just on here seeing if we are going to try and connect with our IP's.  I think a good way to do this away from class and is easily accessible by all of us is by using AIM/AOL.  This would allow most of us if not all of us to meet at once easily.  Just an idea!  Great job on the project so far.

  24. Unknown User (btwahl)

Whats up everyone?  I have been doing some editing to get us started towards finishing the page.  What I have done so far is meant to be an example of what to do.  Let's do it!

  25. Sorry that I have lost track of our project for a while...I have been driven by one task after another for weeks. Ok, no excuse and get down to work. See what I have to do.

  26. Unknown User (davis43)

Hey guys the page is looking better.  I just went through and added a few things and tried to clean the page up a little bit.  Great job everyone so far!  Let's try and clean up the page a little more and make the project look even better!  See you guys in class tomorrow.

  27. Unknown User (btwahl)

good work everyone...the page is looking better and better!

  28. Unknown User (twhitney)

When I was looking at other group's wiki pages, most of them have their names at the top of the page, should we do this too? I don't know if it is required or not...just a suggestion!

  29. Hello!  I am project manager for Team 36 ZOHO Notebook.  I set up a space for you to post our Peer Review.  It is in the children section on our wiki.  I created a page for our review on your children section, I hope you guys don't mind.  It was getting late and I have kiddos to get to bed so I just went ahead and posted it.  Let me know if you have any questions or if you don't understand our comments I compiled the whole groups ideas for you.  Good Job by the way!

    Best,

Hey Chris, what is your e-mail so I can send you my works cited to put on the Bibliography page?

  31. Hey guys, so happy to see what has been created here. A beatiful job, isn't it? Thank you all for making we three, who did little for the project, part of our team. If there is any favor that we could do for you, just feel free to ask, such as editing a Chinese wiki? LOL, just a joke. Wish you all good luck in the coming presentation(wink)

Hi!  My name is Kimberly and I just added the FACS lesson plan.  What a great idea adea to incorporate Photoshop Online into the classroom.  This program allows the students to put a new light upon their work and to be creative in doing so!
