The Benefits of Skype In A Secondary School Setting

                                                                                             
Thanks to technology, people's knowledge all over the world has expanded. Teachers are now able to incorporate a great number of things into their lesson plans that they may not have been able to before. With the use of Skype, teachers may be able to reach a whole new level of knowledge. Can you imagine; instantly you could be text chatting with a famous author who is living in Europe for a paper that the students are working on. Or you could be on the other end of a video call to a famous archeologist who is working on his next project in Africa for a history project.

English Paper Lesson Plan (document)

Objectives

Students will achieve the following objectives:

  • Students will be able to text chat with an author who is residing in Europe for a paper.
  • Students will gain background on the author as well as his work, with first hand information to help them develop their papers.

Materials

Computers
Internet Connection
Webcam
Skype

Procedure

  1. Split the classroom in half and assign the students into two different groups.
  2. Set a date with the author for each group to be able to talk to him.
  3. Teach students the basics of Skype for those who are unaware of how to use it.
  4. Have the students talk to the author on their assigned time and date and use the information they gain as a guideline for their papers.



History Project Lesson Plan (document)

Objectives

Students will achieve the following objectives:

  • Students will be able to video chat with an archeologist residing in Africa for a history project.
  • Students will gain information on the archeologist, as well as the history of the work he is currently working on.

Materials

Computer
Internet Connection
Skype
Webcam

Procedures

  1. Split the classroom into two groups and place the students within the two groups.
  2. Set a date and time for the archeologist to be able to talk to each group.
  3. Teach the students the basics of skype and how to use the video chat function (Make sure they are comfortable with it).
  4. Have the students talk to the archeologist on their assigned time and date and use that information they gain as guidelines for their projects.
