What is Stixy?

What is the Purpose of Stixy?

The purpose of Stixy’s is to allow members to share information and communicate via a public or private online bulletin board to a targeted group of people.

What Does Stixy Do?

What Can Stixy Members Do?

I. History

-Questions to consider: How was the application developed? How does the application work? Are there any ways to use this application alongside others?

<INSERT RESEARCH POSTS>

(Elizabeth) - Stixy was founded by Jonas Hoglund and Andrew Ottoson. Stixy’s allows its users to create organized “bulletin boards” called Stixyboards. Users can then upload pictures, files, notes, bookmarks, and more to their Stixyboards. They are then able to share their Stixyboards boards with whomever.(1)

(Britni) - This application organizes files, photos, and reminders to name a few.  This application can work by being set on private.  This enables unwanted people to see or use your board unless you the creator choose to open your Stixy for public view. (2)

(Britni) -  If a user wishes to keep an element from being moved or altered, a check box for locking the widget is offered. This is how teachers can control the Stixy page.

(Ashley) - Stixy debuted in San Francisco, CA during a conference given by TechCrunch.  http://www.appappeal.com/app/stixy

(Britni) - The Stixy application is Free to use. All you need is to make a password up for your very own Stixy account. It's simply and easy to use. (2)

(Britni) - While others may add to or edit content, changes are not made in real time. The page must be refreshed to see the most recent revisions. If changes are not saved prior to refreshing, those changes will not be saved. (3)

(Britni) - Stixy will never give or sell your e-mail address or other personal information to a third party, except when required by law. (2)

(Whitney)-Stixy was founded by Jonas Hoglund and Anders Ottoson in 2007. They created Stixy because they wanted to create a site as an alternative to information management systems. They wanted a site with fewer restrictions compared to other existing sites created for information management. (5)

(Whitney)-Since the day Stixy was introduced, there have been very few increases in functionality or updates. In less than a year the site has went from 6000 unique visitors to less than 1000. (5)

II. How Stixy Relates to other Applications

-Questions to consider: How does this application compare to the competitors? What are some unique uses of this specific application?

<INSERT RESEARCH POSTS>

(Elizabeth) - Stixy is similar to the website Wallwisher. Both allow someone to build a “wall” and upload information, however with Stixy it is easier to share that information from person to person. (7)

Thinkature is similar to Stixys. They describe it as a workspace for everyone to share. It is interactive and unlike Stixy's the page does not need to be refreah inorder to see others posts. http://www.thinkature.com/about/ (8)

III. Real World Application

-This section will include 3 Lesson Plans for each Elementary, Secondary, and Post Secondary levels. One out of the three needs to be STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, & Math) related.

-An additional section under this heading will provide information about how this application can be used in a Business/Industry Setting.

(Ashley)- To access Stixy, a person(s) will need to register an account.  They will need to have an email address and also create a password.  No activation or further information required for the online bulletin board.  Immediately they can invite others to join their group by email, and Stixyboars can be used instantly.  http://www.appappeal.com/app/stixy

(Dustin)- This application allows for effective communication via the Stixy site. Large groups are able to see information the my colleagues or myself might add to the site. It was developed for everyone's use, and is a very free-form applications. It can be used to solve a variety of problems, plan events, or just share information easily with a classroom.

(Dustin)- According to the sticky website some users have been looking for ways to increase the utility of the site.Some suggestions have included interactive desktops. While it is possible to make stixy your background for some Windows and Mac users, Windows Vista does not support this option. Others are brewing ways in which bloggers could increase "community interaction."

(Dustin)- It is possible to send out a mass e-mail to every member of your stixy group by typing a message in the "Notify of Updates" box located in the stixyboard options page.

IV. Demonstration of Educational Value

<INSERT RESEARCH POSTS>

(Elizabeth) – Stixy is a great web tool for the classroom. It allows teachers to share homework and other classroom information to their students via the web. The whole classroom can have a Stixy and each individual student can have one as well. They can upload homework, research, or other information at will. Here is a great website that expands on this topic http://ilearntechnology.com/?p=1943. (6)

(Britni) - Stixy is being used in schools today.  One Middle School used stixy to post their summer reading recommendations.  I thought this was a great way to take advantage of what stixy has to offer.  Here is the site where stixy was used effectively http://www.stixy.com/guest/42049. (1)

(Dustin)- Stixy can be used as a personal portfolio for a student. Students are able to have their own stixy page on which they could post photos, text, and documents. It is a great place for a student to keep a collection of what they have been doing. They could also keep their parents and teachers aware of their progress by inviting them to be guests at their Stixyboard.

(Ashley)-  Stixy is very effective.  You can provide web-based lists for: information, lists, phots, documents, and to do list postings.  People can access for sharing required materials quickly and effectively.  Stixy is easy to access and organize in a manner that anyone can access the information intended to get across to the group members.  http://www.appappeal.com/app/stixy

(Whitney)- I believe that Stixy would be a very benficial site for a high school or college level instructor. Through this site you can post reminders, assignments, due date and many other types of important classroom information. They can create a page only accessible to thier students. They can also create an adminstrator type figure who will be the only one able to add or remove information. This fact is a plus for instructors because students wouldnt be able to change assignments or due dates.

V. How Stixy is used Internationally?

-Provide examples and/or information about how this application can be used in countries outside of the United States.

(Britni) - Here is how Stixy is used internationally!  http://www.stixy.com/guest/37443

(Amanda) - Stixy can also be used in other countries to simply post photos of an event that has taken place similar to using an online scrap book.  Here is an example.  http://www.stixy.com/guest/30035
