What is Chartle?

Chartle's main purpose is to “allow people to create, publish, and share rich interactive visualizations online.” The design and principle purpose of Chartle is simple, allowing users to create charts stress-free. Many programs, such as Microsoft Excel, are often complicated, giving users too much information. Chartle simplifies this information and visually gives users options that they cannot see when creating charts in other software. The program's greatest asset is the combination of charts available. You would need to use multiple programs to get the same types of charts that Chartle provides.

Development

Dieter Krachtus developed Chartle starting in 2008.  Chartle is hosted on the main server in the Netherlands and on Google servers in the United States to ensure availability and security.
Dieter Krachtus currently works as a senior software architect and is also pursuing a PhD thesis at the Interdisciplinary Center for Scientific Computing in Heidelberg, Germany. His goal in the next step of Chartle is to allow users to import data from software such as Excel into Chartle.net for users to create charts and tables based on their data. Tutorials are also going to be added to the website for the user to easily create charts stress-free. \[2.\]

How Chartle Works

There are three easy steps to using Chartle.
1. First, pick the type of chart. The charts available include, but are not limited to, pie charts, line graphs, tables, and maps.

2. Next, pick a title for the chart as well as fix the legend and sizing. The option of making a 3-dimensional chart exists for users to create as well. Then, add the data.  Do this by clicking the “Data” tap which is located next to the “General” tab.

*3.* The third and last step in using Chartle is publishing the chart.  First, click the “Publish, share, or embed” icon. A box will show up asking for the title of the chart, the author’s name, and a brief description of the chart. Another web page will pop up showing the successfully created and published chart. Please watch the tutorial below for further explanation. \[3.\]

How Chartle Relates to Other Applications

Wiki Markup
Chartle is easily compatible with other Web 2.0 applications. It has the capability to be embedded in a website such as Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, etc. at the touch of a button. \[5.\]

Section

The only drawback is that these websites do not actually load the chart itself, only a link to the chart. Also, it is rather difficult to upload the actual chart because it cannot be copy and pasted. Instead, it must have a screen shot taken of it and then that screenshot must be copy and pasted onto your website, PowerPoint, or Word document which makes the chart no longer interactive. If you have internet access on the computer you are using, then Chartle is really easy and compatible with all of the different Microsoft Office programs and other Web 2.0 apps.

As compared to other Web 2.0 chart applications, Chartle is very easy to use and is fun and interactive. It is really easy to use in comparison to other Web 2.0 chart applications. Like most applications, it has undo and redo buttons, and has an impressively large limit to the steps that can be undone or redone.

Unique Ways of Using Chartle

Chartle is such a unique program that allows many of its users to express themselves and their needs in many different ways. Besides the normal ways that one can express the work by using a normal chart, Chartle offers many unique ways that adds personality and variety.  Chartle offers it’s users not only the basic charts, but others too. They include the following: Map charts, Google Map charts, Gauge Charts, Dynamic Charts such as annotated and Motion Charts, and so much more. These Charts differ so much from the ones that are accessible from programs such as Microsoft’s Excel program or Mac’s Keynote program. Using Chartle in a Business Setting

  • Training purposes**   Get new employees prepared to work for the company. For example, within a school system, new teachers could use Chartle as a major resource in relating material to the students.
  • Big Business Use
    • Wiki Markup
Businesses could use this wiki for both training and resource use. The Chartle page would help when developing an illustration of projected numbers for the company, etc. that need to be presented to a small or large group. Other reasons for the Chartle use: Clarity, Communication, Motivation, Coordination, Creativity, Time Management, Flexibility, Manageability, Efficiency, and Accountability. \[6.\]
  • Charting Advantages
    • Can display relative proportions of multiple classes of data; size of the circle can be made proportional to the total quantity it represents; summarizes a large data set in visual form; is visually simpler than other types of graphs; can permit a visual check of the reasonableness or accuracy of calculations; requires minimal additional explanation, and is easily understood due to widespread use in business and the media.
  • Charting Disadvantages
    • Does not easily reveal exact values; many pie charts may be needed to show changes over time; fails to reveal key assumptions, causes, effects, or patterns, which can yield false impressions.

Using Chartle in an Educational Setting

Chartle can be used a variety of ways in the classroom. Students presenting presentations can create visuals without having to use Microsoft Office other similar and costly products. Chartle.net offers students and teachers an easy and stress-free way of creating visuals at no cost. Teachers can enhance lesson plans and lectures by supplementing information by use of charts. Educators and students can expect many new updates within the upcoming months from Chartle, including importing data from Word and Excel.

Student Use: Students could use the wiki for preparation for class activities and materials. A short demo and introduction to the wiki in class would be helpful. Students can illustrate their weekend activities within a chart from Chartle and then write an essay about their weekend, for example. The ability to use the quick and easy charting system may also help when completing a research assignment that requires illustrations of their findings in a visual format. A lot of times students just put their information in a boring power point followed with bullets of the information they found from their research. With Chartle, you can put this information in a simple easy to read chart, bar graph, etc. This makes the presentation much more creative and easier to follow without bordom occuring. There are many more uses for Chartle by students, but these are just a few that will make your presentation stand out from the rest.
