The owner and developer of Photorem is Alberto Bulletti. Right now the company is being managed from Italy, but he also lived in the United States for a few years. Bulletti is a web project manager and also a senior developer for many other companies internationally. He works remotely from Italy, managing the different companies. Photorem is a personal project that he created and hand developed. Many people now wonder, why did Bulletti invent the website Photorem? The main reason Bulletti created Photorem was to research and test the capabilities of a LAMP (no license for the development, Linux, Apache, MySql, PHP), structure and of the graphic libraries GD. Bulletti a senior web developer who worked in the United States for a Computer Company in medicine for a few years, where he developed the first version of Photorem for medical purposes in an open source website (meaning it was a non-profit website) and after a while he developed the second version of Photorem (still being used for medical purposes) entitled VisualMD. (http://thevisualmd.com/myvisualmd). In the VisualMD version, the system is able to handle hospital files such as MRI, PET, and CT scan; completely from web, without using third party’s software to convert the hospital files. The version "VisualMD" of Photorem has been developed for about three years now, taking almost two years to develop, and allows medical professionals to upload, view, and edit hospital files. After VisualMD, about a year ago, Bulletti stated developing Photorem. He worked on the project for about a month since his latest version. Making Photorem a place for research purposes, to implement the older version and test the new web technologies coming up every day. Bulletti finished the current version of Photorem in August 2009 posting it up online for anyone to use in September. Since then, there have not been any upgrades to the system yet, but he plans on doing so since there will be more of a buzz about his website. The idea behind Photorem is to allow people to share and manage media files online without using external software like Photoshop or any other editing software to make a presentation. Bulletti was inspired by Windows Paint because of the fact that it is easy for most people to understand. Bulletti just went a step further to making it all online, to make it easier to share documents with other people. Bulletti openly admits that Photoshop online was the main website he based a model for his website off of, but he says it was a definitely model and not just a copy. He hand built the website with all of his own coding. He also has a different set up for video use on his website.
2. How Photorem Works
There is no manual for Photorem at this time, however, a new version is in progress for future development. Bulletti did tell that there are a few simple steps in getting an account and easily managing the information you add to the website. How to use Photorem in a few steps: Create an account > login and create a new presentation (top menu) > select the presentation you created on the right column > start uploading media in your presentation > play with the media in your presentation Editing: Photorem allowed you to use some features of the graphic library GD2 installed in my server. In particular you can: rotate, scale, annotate, paint, zoom, crop and filter images. Some features are limited by the memory allocated from the server side (the server I'm using is a common hosting service, very cheap and with some memory limits). For this reason big images cannot be resized or painted. These limits can be fixed by using a virtual hosting and allocating more memory for the execution of php. The current version allowed you to connect with: Picasa (Google Images Software) and YouTube (generic search and single accounts). The next version (upgrade soon), it will be connected with Twitter as well but not yet for Facebook. The reason is because from Twitter you can redirect automatically the posts to Facebook, so the easy approach it was to connect Photorem to Twitter. Photorem allows you to create presentations. This is the first and most important part to let you organize your media.
3. Getting More Out of Photorem
You can create as many presentations as you want and upload as many media as you need. Into the presentations you can upload: images, videos, documents, MP3 and hospital files (DI-COM). You can also add to your presentations: YouTube Videos and Picasa images. After you created the presentations with your media inside, you can organize your media files (drag and drop the images in the right column), create a slide show of the images, email them to your friends and most important, editing the assets. On top of these features, you can make a webcam span shot, save it in your presentation and email it to friends (the webcam snapshot is a very advanced component and currently in development for future upgrades, it allowed filters and it has a motion capture pretty accurate).
II. HOW PHOTOREM RELATES TO OTHER APPLICATIONS
1. Comparison to Competitors
Photorem offers many different tools that can be used for photo editing. User photos can be shared in slide shows as well as single photos. The user can simply choose the pictures they want to be displayed and away they go. Users can also share the pictures they create on Twitter and Facebook. Photorem has not been updated since August 2009, and it still has a few bugs (errors) in there, but Bulletti preferred to upgrade the entire application instead of bug fixing continuously. The main reason why he has yet to upgrade the website is because he is working on few projects at the moment and could not fix some visible errors you can find into Photorem.
2. What Makes Photorem Unique
Photorem accounts are free and only require you sign up and agree to the terms and conditions of the website. Photorem gives members unlimited storage for pictures, videos, and other media. The estimated worth of Photorem is $671.6 USD. There are about 300 daily page views and the ad revenue each day is about $0.92. Photos can be shared by doing slide shows as well. Unlike other photo sharing websites Photorem offers unlimited space. It also allows you to use editing tools like zoom, annotate, paint, filter, crop, rotate, and resize. We didn't do artifacts for PhotoRem but just digital documents. Photorem, the project itself, is under construction, he is wanting to implement more and more new features with higher quality to the website as well. Bulletti is hoping to one day have a very professional looking website once he has worked out all the details.
III. REAL WORLD APPLICATION
1. Educational Lesson Plans
Alberto Bulletti wants to create a program completely based on the idea of be educational for students to use or teachers to teach. Bulletti gave us advice on how he thinks the best way to use Photorem or any other website based for media purposes. To quote Bulletti, “I think the best usage can be educational, in particular the creation of presentations allowed you to maintain your assets (media) online and show, restyle, and organize them to avoid as much as possible the usage of third party software like image editors or similar.” Bulletti offers workshops to help his fellow colleagues in understanding the version (VisualMD) to my colleagues in AnatomicalTravel. This is because the version VisualMD has different features inside like the ability to read and view hospital files, which is more advanced than anything else. The average load time of this website is 0sec. That is why it is among the 100% website that take longest to load because there are 37 links that direct to the Photorem home page. This could be a problem for teachers because if an entire class is on the application at once the system may be even slower (http://dataopedia.com/photorem-com). Teachers can use this application for making their own photo slideshows or even share their own videos. Teachers may find this useful to their class because it could be a fun way to connect the class to the community. A teacher could use Photorem to make a slideshow of a class project or field trip. This is a good link that is promoting the use of Photorem for teachers (http://www.edutecher.net/links.php?id=923).

IV. How Photorem is used Internationally
Bulletti works in many parts of the world but he is only allowed to tell us of his position in AnatomicalTravel, LLC (http://www.thevisualmd.com) located in New York, USA. He cannot speak about others because they are pharmaceutical companies who want to remain anonymous. Photorem is a LAMP software and it is under CreativeCommons license. The software itself is not storing sensitive data and it tries to avoid, as much as possible, the limits or the restrictions of some states. In particular, he is trying to accomplish some filters and rules for countries like China. There are other forms of Photorem, Bulletti informed us. VisualMD USA http://thevisualmd.com/myvisualmd, Italy and International English (http://www.clinicover.com/us/register.php, http://www.medicando.com/it/register.php), EMR English version (under construction) http://www.indebug.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=60&Itemid=59. Many countries are supported by Photorem in the sense that it offers many different options in language choice. The only trouble Bulletti has had with language is the Oriental characters, meaning that some Chinese and Korean terms are not understood by the system and the solution can be the installation of a special characters plug in the server side. The system itself supports already the Chinese language but not for the media file names. He decided to develop the first version of Photorem in English, but the system is already multi language based, this means the application can be translated into another language without touching the code for the website. Bulletti accomplished this by simply enabling a Language Plugin. When asking if he wanted to spread the company to other countries he said, “For sure, I would like to make Photorem a multi language website, like other web applications. But, this will take more time than expected, because I first would want to upgrade the current version, I have not been in touch with the original page enough.” Bulletti also works for a few companies; the latest was AnatomicalTravel, LLC in New York City (http://www.anatomicaltravel.com). I quote Bulletti in saying, “I cannot consider other companies, like Photoshop, my competitors, especially because the investment for Photorem was around 35 Euro for the first year (domain, hosting and database). In comparison to Adobe and/or other companies except Photorem, they use the server side, which is Akamai and private servers (3 to 5 k per month).” One of the first version of Photorem, VisualMD ( http://thevisualmd.com/myvisualmd), is already for an exclusive portion of the public, particularly for the medical field and some pharmaceutical companies. Photorem itself it will be public (free registration) and there is no intention to limit the usage to someone. The Open Source mentality and in general the "CreativeCommons" (http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/3.0/) license is the base on Bulletti’s development. His actual revenue is coming from online sponsors, based on the usage of the application.
