Following this series of lessons students will be able to:

    • Speak with a student from another country
    • Be able to communicate in Spanish well enough to visit a Spanish-speaking country

    Overview

In this series of lessons students will speak through Google Talk Video with students from a class in a Spanish-speaking country to increase their communication skills with a fluent speaker. Additionally, they will be able to help their Spanish-speaking partner with English.

    Materials

    • Computer (one per student)

    Procedures

    1. Before beginning the activity students should have the following background knowledge:
      • Basic knowledge of the Spanish language and how to form sentences.
      • Knowledge of the country their partner lives in (large cities, geographical location, attractions).
      • Knowledge of words used for transportation, food and drink, and tourist activities.
    2. Students will be assigned a partner from another country (the international partners will be found by the teacher) and given a computer workstation on which they will sign onto their Google account.
    3. Once online, the students will be able to chat "face to face" with their international partners, communicating about both the United States and their partner's country. The communication can be in both Spanish and English to help both students improve their language skills.
    4. In the conversation the students should practice using phrases and words needed to communicate when traveling in a foreign country.
    5. This activity can be repeated on a weekly basis to improve student's language skills. (Each week a topic may be assigned to to help students talk about educational and relevant material.)

Lesson Plan 2: Secondary Education - Government

    Objectives

Following this lesson students will be able to:

    • Write about local government procedures.
    • Present specific sides of current local government issues.

    Overview

In this lesson students will communicate, via Google Talk Video, with a local government official (ex: state congressman). Students will "interview" the government official about the local procedures in government and additionally about a current "hot topic." Students will then be asked to write a paper about the issue, presenting the side of the argument their official holds.

    Materials

    • Computer (one per student)

    Procedures

    1. Students will be assigned a government official (contacted previously by the teacher to receive consent from the government official).
    2. Before beginning the activity students should have the following background knowledge:
      • Basic knowledge of the local government procedures.
      • Knowledge of their government official (what party do they affiliate with, what issues do they feel strongly about, how long have they been in office, etc.).

    3. Students will be assigned a computer workstation and asked to sign onto their Google account and begin communication with their official.
    4. Once online, the students will be able to chat "face to face" with their government official. This will allow them to interview the official, asking questions about local procedures, basic government knowledge, and facts about the official's stance on issues.
    5. The student will also be required to find out the official's stance on a particular topic (a "hot" issue) and ask the official what steps or actions are being taken relevant to this issue. (The student should attempt to get as much in depth information here as possible).
    6. Following the conversation student's will be asked to write a paper summing up what they have learned from their official, including information on the specific issue, the official's stance and actions being taken. Students will also be required to write a thank you letter to the government official, showing appreciation for their time and efforts.

    Grading

Students will be given a small participation grade for their communication during the chat. The majority of the grade will come from the paper and how well the student demonstrates a knowledge of the local government, government official and the specific issue. Additionally, a small number of points will be given from writing the thank you letter.

    Countries and their Cultures

    Post-Secondary

    Objectives

Students will conduct research on the internet to gain valuable background knowledge about the country they are assigned.  They will need to be able to prove that they have shown interest in becoming more familiar with the country and culture that it represents.  Once students have shown they are ready to interact with the students from that country we will set up a time and date for the two students to interact with one another over the web via Google Talk Video. Once the student has interacted with their international partner they will be required to right a follow up paper talking about their experiences.

    Essential Questions

What are some of the common misconceptions about the specific country and culture assigned and what can we do to overcome them?

    Materials

    1. Computer with internet and webcam
    2. Headphones and microphone.
    3. Notebook paper and pencil to take notes during interaction with the international student.

    Introduction

When students first enter the room they will individually be assigned a country that have previously been selected for them. Once the students have their country assigned to them they will continue to their seats where they will answer the question that has been written on the board. "What are some common misconceptions about this country and its culture?" This question is intended to spark their interest in the topic so that they can begin the research process. Once the research process is finished they will report to the professor or TA to be assigned a date and time to meet with their international partner.

    Prior knowledge and experience

Quickly review with them some of the common misconceptions about the countries that have been discussed in class.  Remind them of the types of things they should be looking for and what kind of question they should ask their international partners.

    Closure

Students will have to share their thoughts and feelings about the country they were assigned after conducting the research and talking to their international partners.  They will be required to give there thoughts both before they did the project and after to make sure they actually got something out of the project.

    Independent Practice

The day the research is done and they talk to their international partners will not be the same day.  In preparation for the upcoming interaction with their partner they should take some time at home to write down some questions they would like to ask.  They need to be familiar with the research they did, so they need to look over their notes as well.

    Evaluation and Assessment

An evaluation will be done on the student as they present their findings to the class.  There will be a rubric handed out with a list of requirements the student must meet. If all requirements are met then the student will receive the appropriate grade as laid out on the rubric.

    Ethnicity and Culinary Arts

    Post-Secondary

    Objectives

Students will be required to conduct research on ethnical foods.  The ethnicity of the food is their choice. Once the student has chosen the ethnicity they are most interested in they will need to see their TA for approval. Once approval has been granted the student needs to find a recipe that they are interested in. The recipe needs to come directly from an international partner that they will be assigned after the ethnicity of their choice has been chosen. The interactions need to be conducted through Google Talk Video.

    Essential Questions

What are some different styles of cooking or different ingredients that are used in their culture that differ from here in the U.S.?

    Materials

    1.     Computer with webcam
    2.     Headphones and microphone
    3.     Notebook paper and pencil
    4.     Supplies necessary to complete your recipe

    Introduction

When students first enter the room they will be given the option of picking an ethnicity they are interested in.  They will then need to conduct the research and engage in the ethnicity they have chosen.

    Prior knowledge and experience

Quickly review the different ethnicities that have been discussed in class.  Review with the student how to use Google Talk Video.

    Closure

Students will have to share their thoughts and feelings about the culture they have chosen. After conducting the research and talking to their international partners they will be required to give their thoughts both before they did the project and after to make sure they actually got something out of the project. They will need to prepare enough food for the class to try. This will determine whether or not the students really put the work into making their ethnical food.
