Graphing with Pie Charts

Objective:

To develop and promote an awareness of the uses of art materials and concepts in the creation of visual information charts and graphs. Math and simple data collection techniques will be used as well to produce the information needed for visual presentation

Materials:

  1. SurveyMonkey link for students
  2. SurveyMonkey teacher question
  3. Worksheets
  4. Blackboard
  5. Chalk
  6. Pencils
  7. Computers

Procedure:

  1. Have a classroom discussion about the types of information that would be interesting to create a graph from.
  2. Off of that list, have the students log on to SurveyMonkey and create a survey that other students can take.
  3. Have the students spend half the class answering others surveys as well as the teachers question.

Teacher’s survey question is: What is your favorite color?

  1. As an example, use the teacher’s data collected to show the class how to put the information onto a pie chart.
  2. Be sure to be exact in your pie chart information by using a protractor to get the correct measurements.
  3. Have the students then create their own pie charts from their information.
  4. If there is extra time, have students come up with other types of graphs that they may be able to use with their survey information.

Evaluation:

Each graph should clearly show the information for which it was developed. Each graph should be easy to read and interpret.
