Role Play: Important Figures in US History

Objective

Students will work individually and research an important figure in US History which has been discussed in class.  They will then prepare a minimum of three clues about their character which they will then post on Present.ly.  The other students will try to guess who he is and put their answers in a response to the post.

Learning Environment

The students will be using computer with internet access in a computer lab or using a computer at home.

Types of Students

The students will be in secondary school grade 10.

Standards

Early National Development: 1775 to 1877 USH.1

Materials

Computers with internet access (lab or personal), present.ly account

Procedures

1.      Each student will first choose an important figure in US History which has been discussed in class and conduct research.  Topics to research are:
a.       Important achievements in their life
b.      Important events
c.       Background of the figure
2.      Once the student has compiled research on their figure, they will then create a present.ly account and sign up in the class’ group.
3.      Then each student will be assigned an order in which they will post their clues on present.ly while the other students try to guess who the figure is.
4.      After all the students have given their clues and their characters have been discovered they will type a one page paper about the process of research and using present.ly to present their information.

Application

The students will role play as an important figure from US history using Present.ly.  The students will also type a one page paper about their research and the process of using Present.ly.

Evaluation

The students will be graded on historical accuracy, ability to efficiently use Present.ly, and the content of their clues.

Evaluated based on the following:
1)      Research – 10 points
2)      Content and Historical Accuracy- 15pts
3)      Use of Present.ly- 15pts
4)      1 page paper- 20 pts
Total: 60pts

 

Photo Progress: Growing a Coleus Plant

Objective

Students will each be given a Coleus plant and over the course of 6 weeks will take photos of their progress in growing the plant.  Each student will have to do individual research as well as remember topics discussed in class while growing their Coleus.  Students will take photos each week of their progress and will post them using Present.ly.  Students will also hold discussions about the progress of their plants including any problems or anything they did which worked well.

Learning Environment

The students will be using computer with internet access in a computer lab or using a computer at home.  They will also create the correct environment to grow their coleus in.

Types of Students

The students will be in grades 9-12 in a Botany class.

Standards

Materials

Coleus plant, computers with internet access, as well as a Present.ly account.

Procedures

1.      Each student will receive a Coleus plant which must be picked up after school in the Botany classroom.
2.      Students will then conduct research about the Coleus plant and how to grow them during class time in a computer lab.
3.      Students will then create an account on Present.ly in order to post the progress of growing their plant within the class’ group.
4.      Students will then take a picture each week for the next six weeks and post their images onto Present.ly in the assigned class period.
5.      After they have posted their image students will hold a discussion about the progress of their plants and any issues or things that have worked.

Application

The students will take pictures of the progress of growing a Coleus plant for their Botany class.  They will also hold discussions about their progress.

Evaluation

The students will be evaluated on the amount of research they do which will reflect in the growth of their plant and the use of Present.ly to display their progress.

Evaluated based on the following:
1.      Research- 20 points
2.      Posting of Photos- 15 points
3.      Discussions- 15 points
4.      Account of Present.ly- 5 points
Total: 55 points


 

Spanish Online Discussion

Objective

Students will hold a discussion using Present.ly using the Spanish language concerning a number of topics which include:
1.      Family
2.      Hobbies
3.      Seasons
4.      Likes or Dislikes

Learning Environment

The students will be in a computer lab with each student having their own computer to take part in the discussion.

Types of Students

Students will be in high school in a Spanish I course.

Standards

 

Materials

Computers with internet access and a Present.ly account.

Procedures

1.      Students will create a Present.ly account in the respected class group.
2.      The instructor will start the discussion by asking a question in Spanish in the post field.
3.      Students will then post their responses and interact with each other using the Spanish language.
4.      After each topic discussion has been closed, the students will then write a short one page paper about their experience with using Present.ly.

Application

The students will hold a discussion using the Spanish language to talk about their family, hobbies, the seasons, and their likes and dislikes using Present.ly.  The students will then write a one page paper about their experience using Present.ly.

Evaluation

The students will be graded on the completion of creating an account with Present.ly, participation in the discussion, correct use of Spanish language (with the exception of accents), and writing a one page paper.

They will be evaluated as the following:
1.      Creating Present.ly account- 5 points
2.      Participation- 15 points
3.      Correct usage of language- 20 points
4.      One page paper- 10 points
Total: 50 points
