Bubbl.us is a free application powered by Flash, and makes it easy for anyone to quickly start planning and sorting out their ideas through the use of linked text bubbles.  Bubbl.us allows you to post your designs on your own website or blog, and share your creations with friends. You can also export your design into a presentation software, such as Microsoft PowerPoint, which can be useful in both business and educational settings. The mind maps created through bubbl.us can be printed as they appear online, or they can be printed as an html (which will print it in an outline form). ^[#1]^
Bubbl.us is a great tool to use because it allows you to visually see how things are being sorted, and makes it easier to later turn your ideas into a well structured paper. Signing up for an account is free and easy, but keep in mind that you can create a bubbl.us mind map without even signing up for an account.  When you start making a chart, you start with one "parent" bubble, and you are able to add more "child" bubbles from there.  You can change the size, color, and positioning of your bubbles at any time. ^[#9]^   Happy "bubbl-ing\!"

h4. {color:#333399}What do you have to do to start using this application?{color}

* Start out by going to the website, [http://bubbl.us|http://bubbl.us]
* {color:#000000}Once on the website, click on "Start Brainstorming"{color}
* {color:#000000}Once you begin, a "Tip of the Day" will appear to help you better understand the site{color}
* You will then be shown a screen with one "parent" bubble which is the beginning of your mind map
* Once you type in your first idea, you can change the color of your bubble, and create another bubble
* On the right hand side of the website, there is also a section which shows you where everything is located on the bubble.  It also shows you everything that you can do and change on the bubble
* You can change the color of your bubble, the saturation, and the brightness as well
* You can hide, collapse, or expand bubbles
* If you create an account, you can add your friends, and this allows fast and easy sharing between them
* You can also save your mind map, and continue it later, or share it with a friend right away

Once you have filled in your bubbles, you have the option to personalize your bubbles with color. There are two different methods you can use to change the colors of them. In the first picture above it is shown what it looks like if you click on “Custom” on the top right of the box. When you click on this, you can customize your color with hue, saturation, and value tools. The second picture above shows us what it will look like if you click on “Palette” at the top right. The colors shown are colors that have already been made that you can select. Simply select the color you want to accept. You have successfully changed the color of your bubble.

h3. {color:#003366}III. How is Bubbl.us related to other applications?{color} {anchor:How is Bubbl.us related to other applications?}
----
h4. {color:#333399}Can it be used in conjunction with other applications?{color}

Mind mapping has become an increasingly popular concept. It allows users to easily navigate through their thoughts and ideas. Bubbl.us is a web-based mind mapping software that is user friendly and fun to use. Bubbl.us is easily compared to MindMeister in function and capability since they are both web-based mind mapping programs. Bubbl.us, however, is free to all users and creating a user account is not necessary in order to create a mind map. In addition, bubbl.us has an endless number of undo capabilities so that the user can back up as much as they want. Bubbl.us not only has great functions, it has also been quoted as "prettier and more dynamic."  In comparison, MindMeister is said to be a more "feature-complete" program according to Jason Clarke. Some of the features on MindMeister include the ability to import mind maps from other mind mapping software and collaborate with other users on the same mind map simultaneously. However, a user can only save 5 mind maps on MindMeister before a fee of $49.92 is charged ^[#3]^ .

Bubbl.us has also been compared to Inspiration which is another mind mapping program. Children illustrate how user friendly and fun bubbl.us is in a video at [http://cegsa.editme.com/Education|http://cegsa.editme.com/Education]. The children say that bubbl.us is easier to navigate, due to the fact that bubbl.us connects the bubbles for the user while Inspiration requires the user to connect the bubbles. A four year old student also stated that bubbl.us looks better than inspiration; however, Inspiration has a feature which allows the addition of images, while bubbl.us does not currently have this capability ^[#4]^ .
\\

Bubbl.us works well for people who like information to be presented in a clear way.  Other applications allow for lots of graphics, fonts, line thickness, etc.  Using too many different visuals can often overshadow the information that is being presented.  Bubbl.us keeps the process simple and relies on color to help distinguish differences in information.

h3. {color:#003366}IV.  Applications of Bubbl.us outside of Education{color} {anchor:Applications of Bubbl.us outside of Education}
----
h4. {color:#333399}What are some unique ways of using this application?{color}

There are many different ways that bubbl.us can be used outside of education:

1.  One of the ways that bubbl.us can be used outside of education is by using it to build family trees.  Since bubbl.us has the ability to create multiple "parent" boxes and "child" boxes, it is a fantastic tool for creating family trees quickly and easily.  One downfall while creating family trees on bubbl.us, is that photos/images cannot be inserted into the trees/mind maps.

!family tree.png|border=1!

2.  Another useful way to use bubbl.us is in creating flow charts. Flow charts are used in technical books and software manuals, and are great visual representations used to train employees to use software, or follow business processes.  When policies or processes need changed, this can easily be done by going back to the bubbl.us site and changing your saved work.

!flowchart.png|border=1!

3.  Bubbl.us can also be used to create different kinds of lists:

* Instead of creating a Christmas list on a piece of paper that just gets thrown away every year, you could use bubbl.us to make a hard copy of the Christmas list.  After every year you could go back into your saved work, and change the list (instead of wasting more paper)\!
* If you tend to buy the same thing when grocery shopping, you could keep a hard copy of your grocery list on bubbl.us, and no longer have the problem of wasting paper each time you go shopping.
\\
\\

\\ !Christmas List.jpg|width=896,height=440!

Some more examples of how to use bubbl.us are:
- keeping track of birthdays and anniversaries
- creating timelines for important events
- thinking of ways to do everyday things, such as saving money
- Chore list by child
- Dinner menu
- Grocery list by section

h3. {color:#003366}V.  Educational Applications{color} {anchor:Educational Applications}
----
h4. {color:#333399}How can Bubbl.us be used in an educational setting?{color}

Teachers have found many ways to incorporate bubbl.us into their classrooms. Class discussions, assignment directions, and pre-writing webs are just a few ways to use bubbl.us in the classroom. The main way teachers use the website is to have their students brainstorm and map out projects and papers. ^[#5]^ It is a great way for students to organize their ideas and findings. Another way teachers use bubbl.us is in group projects. Students are allowed to network with each other and look at other's maps. By doing this they are able to easily work on their own tasks and share with their peers. Also, because you are able network with others, teachers are able to grade student's homework online, peers are able to do peer reviews on their own time, and it is all paperless\! ^[5 |#5]^

Bubble.us has a number of uses, but assistive technology is not normally thought to be one. It can easily be used as a concept map. Concept maps are utilized for students who have difficulty organizing ideas in their heads.Bubbl.us can be used to aid mentally challenged students.

h4. {color:#333399}How can Bubbl.us be used in different grade levels?{color}

This website is most commonly used in classrooms Grade 5 and above; however, there are ways for teachers of younger grades to use the website as well. ^[#6]^ Teachers in younger grades can make blank maps and have their students fill in the blanks. As the students become older, they can begin to use the computer in order to create their own maps. Teachers can also use bubbl.us to teach younger students simple things such as the four season.

h5. {color:#333399}What are some examples of Bubbl.us being used to illustrate its current or potential educational value?{color}

As a teacher, bubbl.us can be used in planning, helping with handouts and presentations, used for assessments, or to help summarize information.  Students often find themselves using it in essay planning and writing, research and note taking, revision, or in analyzing findings and events ^[#4]^.

One example of Bubbl.us being used to illustrate its current or potential educational value is from a teacher who posted a discussion online.  His name is Ben Davis and he had his class use bubbl.us to help brainstorm for their research papers.  He pointed out that bubbl.us allows his students to get their daily fix of social networking.  By creating his own account, he became friends with his students and could easily grade their work that way as well.  Through using bubbl.us, Davis' class was able to engage in further discussion on how they could organize different topics for their research.  ^[#5]^

Check out Ben Davis' success story with bubbl.us, by clicking on the link below: ^[#6]^

h3. {color:#003366}VII. International Aspects{color} {anchor:International Aspects}
----
h5. {color:#333399}How is this application used in China? {color}

This web 2.0 application has yet to reach popular culture in China.  Our International Partners who attend Beijing-Normal University in China agree that when brainstorming or coming up with ideas, the exchange is done mostly in person because it is seen as more efficient. Bubbl. us has worked hard to update their multilingual capabilities to help the exchange of ideas between different ethnic groups easier.    Another tool most commonly used for brainstorming exchange is an online version of live chat, such as instant messaging, facebook chat, and g-mail chat.
\\

h5. {color:#333399}Are there unique features of the application that may be more relevant to those outside of the United States? {color}

It does not appear as if Bubbl.us has any features making it more user-friendly for people outside of the United States; however, bubbl.us has the unique capability of saving and sharing.  Once you become a member (for free), you are able to save the mind maps you make, and share them with other people who are members.  You are also able to use the collaborate tab, in which you can work together with another member in creating a mind map. ^[#1]^   This is great for group/collaborative projects, and this can even include people from around the world\!
